Chapter Twelve
John lay on the bed, smiling into the darkness. He no longer needed to distract himself from reality by going over any poetry or mathematical formulae or composing any scathing letters to editors. He thought only of touching and kissing Tully. If only he could see the big, strong body as he explored it, rather than hiding in the darkness.
With the lights off, he might imagine Tully’s massive form to be that bastard, Cullinen, who had nearly overpowered him. They had a similar physique. And yet Tully felt completely different moving on top of him.
Yes, it would be so gratifying to be able to examine those rippling muscles. John had had no notion that he’d longed for that sort of body. His other involvements had been with men more lean and slender, like himself.
But now a laborer. A hulking laborer with calloused hands, and he couldn’t imagine finding another man even remotely as appealing.
John slept through the rest of the night’s checks and woke to an attendant thumping open the door.
“Up with you. Don’t want you sleeping too long.” The falsely jolly voice belonged to Jenkins, that sly and cruel jailor.
John yawned and sat up. “I slept well for once. What is my scintillating schedule for the day?”
“Water bathing, breakfast, outdoor activity.” Jenkins folded his arms and appeared bored. “You’ll be one of my charges now that Attendant Tully is gone.”
A one-two punch in the stomach and the face left John figuratively flat on his back. He could scarcely draw breath to speak. “I beg your pardon?”
It occurred to him that Jenkins was only pretending indifference. His eyes were avid, watching John’s every response, and a sort of devilish glee sparkled in his eyes.
“Yeah. Your special friend, Mr. Tully, has left us.”
He knows. The man with the gin-soaked breath knew something was going on between John and Tully. God knew how he’d guessed or what he may have seen, but John could read it in his face. Another jolt of horror rocked him as he realized Tully may have been sacked because of what they’d done.
Just last night. Here in this bed. He’d been so happy, so very happy. How could the faint start of hope be destroyed so quickly?
“Best get up, Mr. Gilliam. You’ve much to do today,” Jenkins prompted as he twitched back the covers. “No time for lounging about.”
But no. If he and Tully had truly been discovered, John would be suffering the repercussions as well. Dr. McAndrew would be here to talk with him about the setback and to devise new methods of torturing John’s evil inclinations out of him. So, if Tully wasn’t fired, where had he gone…and why?
“All right,” John managed to blurt out, because Jenkins waited for him to say something.
John was pleased to show some dignity for once as he rose from the bed and changed into his clothes. This place might have left him with little pride, but he’d gather the shreds around him and never, ever let Jenkins know he was affected by the news of Tully’s leaving.
